Roof Rats in Short Pump and Glen Allen: What Western Henrico Homeowners Should Know

Trapping: Snap traps for roof rats need to be placed at height — on rafters, on shelving, on the top of pipes and beams — not at floor level. Traps set at floor level in the attic are largely ineffective for roof rats, which prefer elevated travel paths.
Bait stations: Roof rat bait stations are designed for elevated mounting. Ground-level bait stations are primarily Norway rat tools.
Exclusion: The exclusion focus is the roofline and upper structure — gable vents, soffit gaps, roofline interfaces. Foundation and crawl space exclusion is not the primary intervention for roof rats (though it may still be needed if Norway rats or mice are also present).
